Sydney Sweeney Stuns in a Sheer Lace Halter and Bermuda Shorts in Venice

The actress landed in Venice on Wednesday for the 83rd Venice International Film Festival wearing one of the most talked-about off-duty looks of the week so far: a sheer, champagne-toned floral lace halter styled with high-waisted khaki Bermuda shorts. It is a strange, wonderful combination on paper, delicate French-style lace up top and crisp menswear tailoring below, and she made it look like the most obvious pairing in the world.

Start with the top, because it is doing a lot. The halter is built from a gauzy, blush-nude lace shot through with floral and scrollwork motifs, finished with a ruffled stand collar that frames the neck and a crossover panel across the chest. Scalloped ruffle trim runs down each side like tiny wings, and the hem drops into a handkerchief point that skims well above the waistband, leaving a strip of toned midriff on full display. Turn her around and there is a second surprise: a structured, corset-style back panel with lace streamers trailing loose down her spine. It is romantic and slightly undone at the same time.

The shorts ground it. Knee-length, cuffed at the hem and cut in a soft khaki cotton, they come with an oversized fabric sash knotted at the front, the tails left to flutter. Bermuda shorts have been quietly staging a comeback for a few seasons now, and this is the argument for them: they make the leg look endless when you finish them with the right shoe.

And what a shoe. Sweeney went with Gianvito Rossi’s Sofia Mule 95, a see-through Plexi stiletto that reads almost invisible from a distance, which is exactly the point. Nothing interrupts the line from hem to heel. She kept the rest deliberately quiet: a small tan leather shoulder bag, a slim gold cuff, pearl studs, a pale manicure, narrow dark sunglasses and blonde hair pulled into a loose half-up style with soft face-framing waves. Her skin looked lit from within, which tracks, since Sweeney is in town as one of Armani Beauty’s global ambassadors.

She is not in Venice with a film this year. She is there as part of Armani Beauty’s largest festival lineup to date, alongside Kendall Jenner and Jonathan Bailey, plus Vittoria Ceretti, Nicholas Galitzine, Luca Argentero, J Balvin and Carlos Sainz. The festival opened Wednesday and runs through Sept. 12, with George Clooney and Ellen Burstyn receiving Golden Lions for Lifetime Achievement and premieres including Danny Boyle’s Ink and Werner Herzog’s Bucking Fastard, starring Kate and Rooney Mara.

Fans knew exactly who they were waiting for. Sweeney paused on her way in to lean into a selfie with a fan, all smiles behind her sunglasses, before continuing on with her security detail. It is the kind of easy, unbothered moment that has made her one of the most watchable arrivals of festival season, whether she is promoting The Housemaid, returning to Euphoria, or simply walking from a car to a door.

The lesson from Wednesday? You do not need a gown to win the day in Venice. Sometimes you just need great lace, great shorts and the confidence to wear both at once.
