The sports broadcasting wing of BBCBBC Sport has renewed its collaboration with The R&A, securing broadcast rights for The Open Championship from 2025 to 2027 through a new multi-year arrangement.

The BBC will continue to provide free-to-air highlights, digital clips, and complete radio coverage of golf’s oldest major on TV, web, and radio platforms under the extended agreement. Audiences can catch the competition on BBC One, iPlayer, Radio 5 Live, BBC Sounds, the BBC Sport website, and social media.

The association began with the 153rd Open at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, which took place from July 17 to 20. BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sounds broadcasted 38 hours of live coverage, starting with the first tee shot on Thursday morning and ending with the last putt on Sunday evening.

Furthermore, TV highlights will also return, with presenters Sarah Mulkerrins and Rishi Persad leading the onsite crew. The commentary lineup includes seasoned voices Andrew Cotter and Ken Brown, with Brown returning his popular ‘Ken on the Course’ segments.

Alex Kay-Jelski, Director of BBC Sport, said, “This is a fantastic deal that ensures audiences can continue to enjoy the very best of The Open across BBC Sport. It’s an iconic moment in the sporting calendar, and BBC Sport will bring the drama and stories to life on TV, iPlayer, Radio 5 Live, BBC Sounds and online.”

Mark Darbon, Chief Executive of The R&A, added, “Extending our long-standing partnership with BBC Sport is incredibly important in ensuring that the drama and excitement of these historic championships will continue to be enjoyed by millions of viewers throughout the UK. The Open sits at the heart of the great British sporting summer and the BBC’s extensive coverage will mean that the compelling stories from the Championship are shared with existing fans as well as inspiring new ones.”

The Open Championship, which rotates around a number of historic links courses in the United Kingdom, is still one of the most renowned tournaments in world golf and a vital fixture in the British athletic calendar. The BBC formerly had complete broadcast rights until 2016, when Sky Sports took over live TV coverage.

This agreement reaffirms the BBC’s dedication to covering big sporting events amidst increased competition for rights. The Open joins an existing rights portfolio that includes the Women’s UEFA EURO 2025, and Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025, as well as the Olympic Games, FA CupUEFA EURO 2028, FIFA World Cups, Match of the Day (Premier League and UEFA Champions League highlights), Six Nations, and Rugby Super League.
