The San Francisco 49ers faced an early challenge this preseason with injuries to their wide receivers.

The team needed to act quickly to maintain depth at the position.

The 49ers found an answer with a familiar name from the NFC West.

“Former Arizona Cardinals WR Andy Isabella has reportedly signed with the NFC West rival San Francisco 49ers after a tryout on Wednesday,” Bob McManaman wrote on X.

Isabella brings speed and experience to the offense at a crucial time. His signing adds an interesting wrinkle to the division rivalry, given his Arizona background.

The 28-year-old has traveled a winding path since entering the NFL.

Arizona selected him in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft after his 4.31-second 40-yard dash caught attention at the Scouting Combine.

He was coming off a record-setting college career at UMass, but his professional journey proved more difficult than expected.

Isabella has 33 receptions for 447 yards and three touchdowns in 43 NFL games.

Most of that production came with Arizona, where he showed flashes but never secured a consistent role.

The Cardinals eventually moved on from him, and he bounced from the Baltimore Ravens to the Buffalo Bills and the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad without finding a permanent home.

His most recent stop was with the St. Louis Battlehawks in the UFL.

The move gives San Francisco insurance while its injured players, including Brandon Aiyuk and Jauan Jennings, recover.

For Isabella, this represents more than just another opportunity. It’s a chance to prove he still belongs in the NFL.
