Motivation, which can be an internal drive or an external stimulus, propels our behavior. It might be toward something we want or, conversely, away from something we don’t want.

Each Enneagram type comes with specific motivators, ones that propel people of that type forward in a specific direction, as well as key demotivators, intense avoidances that also drive their responses and behavior.

The core motivators and demotivators be thought of as 1st level motivators and demotivators for each type. In addition, there are 2nd and 3rd level motivators for each type; 2nd level motivators are type-based improvements, while 3rd level motivators are deeper longings and high aspirations.

ENNEAGRAM THREES

Core Motivator: Gaining respect and admiration

Implicitly and explicitly, Threes act in ways to try to gain the respect and admiration of others. What exactly they want the respect and admiration for depends primarily on their social context. In other words, what is high status or respected in that particular environment.

Core Demotivator: Failure

Avoidances are often as strong or stronger than what we search for. If a Three believes that they will fail or that failure is a possibility, they either go into rapid action so this doesn’t happen or they may not even start something at all. They don’t believe “no risk; no reward.” They think “no result, no reward.”

2nd Level Motivators: To feel valued without having to continuously prove their worth

Having to constantly prove yourself can be exhausting, so to feel successful and effective without feeling the pressure of always having to prove yourself is a great relief. Even better is to be able to relax and just be, without feeling the need to constantly impress others.

3rd Level Motivators: Having deep, meaningful relationships

Threes often have relationships but they may not be deep or long lasting. Deeper relationships require time – Threes keep themselves very busy with work and activities – and the willingness and ability to share emotionally, which can be a challenge for many Threes. However, this helps them find out what they really want, apart from what they believe they should want.

Next in this series will be the motivational structure for Enneagram Fours.
