Motivation, which can be an internal drive or an external stimulus, propels our behavior. It might be toward something we want or, conversely, away from something we don’t want.
Each Enneagram type comes with specific motivators, ones that propel people of that type forward in a specific direction, as well as key demotivators, intense avoidances that also drive their responses and behavior.
The core motivators and demotivators be thought of as 1st level motivators and demotivators for each type. In addition, there are 2nd and 3rd level motivators for each type; 2nd level motivators are type-based improvements, while 3rd level motivators are deeper longings and higher aspirations.
ENNEAGRAM FIVES
Core Motivator: Knowledge and wisdom
Fives are on a lifelong quest to know as much as they can about the areas that are important, interesting, or intriguing to them. As a result, anything that stimulates their knowledge, and in particular intellectual knowledge, is a great motivator.
Core Demotivator: Intrusion by others and energetic depletion
Avoidances are often as strong or stronger than what we search for. Fives avoid intrusion and loss of energy as if, at times, their life depended on it. They guard the amount of time they spend with others, protect their physical boundaries, are cautious about who they get close to, and safeguard their personal or private information.
2nd Level Motivators: To truly know themselves better using a systematic framework. To better understand the reactions of others, thus increasing predictability in interactions.
Fives spend a great deal of time reflecting on their lives, most often in private, reviewing their interactions with others when they are alone, and they can also be deeply self-reflective. Anything that helps them do all this better or more clearly is a great motivator.
3rd Level Motivators: To be better acknowledged for their talents and skills. To gain greater access to and become more integrated in all three centers: head, heart and body
Fives will rarely toot their own horn, brag, or say anything in public that is self-aggrandizing. They find it offensive when others do this, plus Fives don’t generally talk about themselves that much. As a result, others may not know the Five’s skills, talents and contributions. Anything that helps Fives share more of their positive attributes, but only in a way they are comfortable with, is a great motivator. Helping Fives get more access to all three Centers of Intelligence helps them become more public about who they are and what they have to offer.
Next in this series will be the motivational structure for Enneagram Sixes.
