Motivation, which can be an internal drive or an external stimulus, propels our behavior. It might be toward something we want or, conversely, away from something we don’t want.

Each Enneagram type comes with specific motivators, ones that propel people of that type forward in a specific direction, as well as key demotivators, intense avoidances that also drive their responses and behavior.

The core motivators and demotivators are thought of as 1st level motivators and demotivators for each type. In addition, there are 2nd and 3rd level motivators for each type; 2nd level motivators are type-based improvements, while 3rd level motivators are deeper longings and higher aspirations.

ENNEAGRAM SEVENS

Core Motivator: Stimulation and pleasure

Sevens crave stimulation, pleasure and possibility. To not have that feels like their wings have been trimmed to such a degree that they can no longer fly. Excited and excitable, they are attracted to external stimuli that activate their senses.

Core Demotivator: Pain, discomfort and limitation

Avoidances are often as strong or stronger than what we search for. Sevens so fervently avoid restrictions, pain and discomfort that this catapults them even more forcefully into the direction of stimulation and pleasure. In other words, the more excitement and stimulation, the less the felt-experience of pain.

2nd Level Motivators: To learn something new, exciting and personally beneficial. To read others better and develop deeper and more consistent empathy.

Sevens relish being exposed to anything novel, stimulating ideas and new people who interest them. Because they use their Mental Center as their primary guide, their Heart Center is not as fully accessible, particularly given that they try to avoid uncomfortable emotions such as fear and sorrow. As a result, learning how to be consistently empathic and how to read others more accurately can be a challenge, but also a motivator.

3rd Level Motivators: To be taken more seriously by others. To feel more complete as a person.

Sevens yearn to be taken more seriously and to feel more whole and integrated, so opportunities that help them learn how to focus for longer periods of time and to explore and even enjoy their interior emotional landscape can be excellent motivators.

Next in this series will be the motivational structure for Enneagram Eights.
