The sophistication of nature
Many people, like me, grow gourds in their gardens. Others collect ceramic or wooden gourds for use in the kitchen or as objéts in their homes. Either way, gourds are beautiful and can be delicious. As members of the fruit family, they stand out in their varieties, tastes, and shapes.
Gourds are botanically classified as fruits, but they are used as vegetables because of their flavor and texture which is like their cousins the squashes and cucumbers. They are hard shelled and while some can be eaten, most are not popular to eat. Gourds are among the world’s oldest cultivated plants and were originally grown to make utensils, storage containers, musical instruments and even birdhouses.
Decorative gourds are made from glass, ceramic, and other materials. They are permanent, artistic alternatives to the natural produce. They are popular to display in the fall, but most are used as year-round decorations.
