They look similar but have different personalities and functions in your home.

Poufs and ottomans are versatile upholstered footrests and/or seats, sometimes with storage.  Technically they are not the same thing.  Poufs are what their name sounds like – softer, lighter, more like large cushions.  Poufs are casual and flexible. They sit right on the floor with no frame or legs and they are easy to move around.  Their style is more bohemian then formal.  The word ‘pouf’ comes from the French word ‘Bouffler’ which means to puff out.

Ottomans are firm with a solid frame, they can have legs or a structured base, and they sometimes offer storage inside.  They are sturdy enough to serve as small tables, often with a tray on top. Ottomans are more traditional and formal pieces of furniture. Ottomans serve as extra seating more often than they do as footrests and are less portable than poufs.
