Timely nuggets of information and ideas we want to share with you.

2 Ways To Use a Semicolon

The semicolon remains one punctuation mark I’ve never fully mastered. Sitting somewhere between a colon and a comma, it performs a function similar to both. The semi-colon connects two stand-alone clauses into one sentence. It is one of the most misunderstood English punctuation marks.  Its mission is to connect two ideas – not identical ideas but ones that are closely related.

For example:

We’re going to the wedding; my husband needs to borrow a tuxedo.

Another common use of a semicolon is to separate items on a complicated list, and it can make such a list easier to read.

For example:

The ingredients include flour from Kansas, USA; cocoa powder from Ghana, West Africa; and vanilla extract from Madagascar, East Africa.

CapaBunga Silicone Wine Caps are reusable, they keep your leftover wine or champagne fresh, do not add much height to bottles standing in tight refrigerator shelves and do not leak so the bottles can be stored upright or on their sides.  They are available in many styles with clever sayings.  They make wonderful presents or stocking stuffers. $5.50 each for the wine caps.  $14.95 for the champagne stoppers.

Gen Z really seems to have life figured out.  They are leading the charge with a new trend called ‘soft socializing’.  It is the Gen Z preferred form of dating.  It’s low-pressure, focused on relaxed, activity-based hangouts.  Gen Z finds traditional dating draining and stressful, and I can’t say I blame them.  Soft socializing involves taking walks, cooking, or doing something solitary but side by side like working on a craft, or reading. The shared activity is what draws the focus instead of you and your date. Gen Z values authenticity, healthy living, and general well-being and soft socializing is their version of traditional dating and it sounds much more fun to me.

This is a real slice of New York City life.  It’s on Instagram and TikTok and I think it’s charming, delightful, and fascinating.  A guy hails a cab, gets in and says, “Take me to your favorite place and keep the meter running”.  What follows are the interviews he has with each cabbie, and each one is a remarkable life story.  I love it for many reasons, but above all, it puts life into perspective and it’s uplifting.  Keep The Meter Running.
