Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) revived their fading Indian Premier League 2026 campaign with a dramatic 9-run victory over Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in a rain-affected thriller at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium on Thursday night.

In a contest reduced to 19 overs per side following rain interruptions, Lucknow produced one of their most complete performances of the season, posting a formidable 209/3 before restricting RCB to 203/6 as the visitors fell short of a revised DLS target of 213.

The victory carried significance far beyond the two points. LSG snapped a six-match losing streak overall and ended an eight-match home losing run at the Ekana Stadium, the longest sequence of home defeats in IPL history. It was also Lucknow’s first win at home this season, their first successful defence of a total in five attempts this year, and their first victory against RCB at the venue after losing the previous two meetings in Lucknow.

For RCB, the defeat marked their first unsuccessful chase in five attempts this season and dealt a setback to their pursuit of a top-two finish.

The night belonged to Mitchell Marsh, who delivered a commanding innings under pressure to transform Lucknow’s fortunes. Marsh smashed 111 off 56 deliveries in a brutal display of power-hitting, striking cleanly against both pace and spin while maintaining control throughout the innings. The Australian all-rounder dictated the scoring tempo from the outset and capitalised brilliantly once conditions eased after the rain interruption.

Marsh received strong support from Nicholas Pooran, who contributed a rapid 38, before captain Rishabh Pant delivered a decisive late surge with an unbeaten 32 off just 10 balls. Pant’s finishing burst proved critical in lifting Lucknow beyond the 200-run mark on a surface that initially appeared difficult for aggressive strokeplay.

Rain interruptions during the first innings created a significant twist in the contest, with the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern recalculation setting Bengaluru a target of 213 in 19 overs despite LSG posting 209. The revised equation immediately increased the pressure on RCB’s batting line-up.

The chase began disastrously for Bengaluru as Virat Kohli was dismissed for a duck by Prince Yadav in the second over. Jacob Bethell also departed cheaply, leaving RCB under pressure inside the powerplay.

Despite the early setbacks, Rajat Patidar launched a counterattack that briefly swung momentum back towards the visitors. Patidar struck a fluent 61 off 31 deliveries, combining aggression with calculated strokeplay to keep the required run rate within reach heading into the closing overs.

RCB still required a major finish, and Tim David threatened to produce another remarkable rescue act with a ferocious 40 off 17 balls. The Australian targeted the shorter boundaries and accelerated rapidly during the death overs before Shahbaz Ahmed produced a crucial breakthrough to dismiss him at a decisive stage of the chase.

Lucknow’s bowlers held their nerve impressively in difficult wet-ball conditions. Prince Yadav emerged as the standout performer with figures of 3/33, including the prized wicket of Kohli, while Shahbaz Ahmed claimed two important wickets during the final overs to shut down Bengaluru’s late charge.

Marsh was named Player of the Match for his match-defining century, which not only powered LSG to a much-needed victory but also reignited their slim hopes of remaining alive in the playoff race.

The result further tightened the IPL 2026 standings, with Lucknow finally finding momentum after weeks of struggles, while RCB missed an opportunity to strengthen their position among the top sides in the competition.

Scorecard:

Lucknow Super Giants: 209-3 , Overs 19, Mitchell Marsh 111, Krunal Pandya 1/31

Royal Challengers Bengaluru: 203-6, Overs 19, Rajat Patidar 61, Prince Yadav 3/33
