What is Snow?

Snow is a combination of frozen precipitation in the form of small ice particles that is typically characterized by its white color and soft form. It is an important part of climate and weather patterns because it is often the method of precipitation – in colder climates, snow can sometimes be the only form of precipitation during the winter months. Snowfall occurs when temperatures are low enough to allow ice crystals to form and usually appears between November and April in temperate zones and from July to September in the polar regions. While the sight of it can be mesmerizing and make for great winter activities, snow can cause disruption to transportation and blocked roads. At higher levels of snowfall can cause power outages. In some cases, melting snow can cause flooding if it melts too quickly. The type of snow that accumulates on the ground can vary in temperature, softness and wetness, which can affect the amount of snow that accumulates in a certain area and how much of a hazard it can be.
