Australia began their three-match ODI series against India with a commanding seven-wicket win under the DLS method at Perth Stadium, capitalising on overcast skies, a tricky surface, and disciplined pace bowling to expose India’s batting frailties.

Persistent rain throughout the day forced multiple interruptions, reducing the match to 26 overs per side. Sent in to bat first, India struggled to find any momentum, managing just 136 for 9 — a total that was comfortably overhauled by Australia, who reached 131 for 3 in 21.1 overs, sealing victory with 29 balls to spare.

Marking his 500th international appearance, Rohit Sharma had a short outing, dismissed for just 8. His dismissal was followed by a rare failure from Virat Kohli, who registered his first duck in 30 ODI innings in Australia.

India’s top three contributed only 18 runs, their lowest combined total in ODIs since the 2019 World Cup semifinal against New Zealand, where they managed just three.

Australia’s pace attack, led by Josh Hazlewood (2/20) and Mitchell Owen (2/20), exploited every bit of movement available on the lively Perth pitch. Matthew Kuhnemann (2/26) added further pressure through sharp turn and accuracy, ensuring India never settled.

A brief resistance came through KL Rahul (38 off 31) and Axar Patel (31 off 38), who stitched together a gritty stand amid the collapse. However, regular wickets halted any real acceleration. Debutant Nitish Kumar Reddy (19 off 11)* provided a late spark, lifting India to a below-par total.

In reply, Australia made light work of the modest DLS target of 131. Despite losing Travis Head early to Arshdeep Singh, the hosts were largely untroubled in the chase.

Captain Mitchell Marsh anchored the innings with an unbeaten 46, while Josh Philippe (37) and Matt Renshaw (21)* played supporting roles to guide the team home. The Australian batting displayed composure and control, showcasing their depth and adaptability in conditions that challenged India’s top order earlier in the day.

The defeat ended India’s run of eight consecutive ODI victories in 2025, underscoring familiar challenges in overseas conditions, early collapses, inconsistency against pace, and overreliance on middle-order recovery.

While Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh bowled with intent, the bowlers were left with too little to defend. Australia, by contrast, will be buoyed by the seamless balance of their lineup and Marsh’s assured leadership in tricky circumstances.

The action now moves to Adelaide Oval on October 23, where India will aim to bounce back and level the series. With conditions expected to favour batting, all eyes will be on India’s top order to respond after a humbling night in Perth.

Scorecard:

India: 136-9, Overs 26, KL Rahul 38, Josh Hazlewood 2/20

Australia: 131-3, Overs 21.1, Mitchell Marsh 46*, Washington Sundar 1/14
